The ‘Go Home’ Van

The UK Home Office recently embarrassed itself by paying for vans to drive around with the following slogan on them:

“In the UK illegally? GO HOME OR FACE ARREST!”

Something should be painfully obvious, the advertising campaign these vans were transmitting was not aimed at immigrants. No sane person could possibly think that a sign telling illegal immigrants to go home would make them leave the country.

The signs were aimed squarely at white british people. They were designed to stoke a feeling of reflexive scapegoating that some elements of our government can build spin on.

The most serious tactical mistake in all this is that it probably benefited UKIP more than anyone in the coalition government.
