Fracking is a Distraction

In the UK there is a pretty significant demonstration going on in response to the governments’ commitment to fracking. There is a discussion about whether it’s a good idea, that is if the benefits outweigh the apparent environmental consequences, whatever they may be. The prime minister has argued that fracking would create some huge number of jobs and reduce our reliance on foreign hydrocarbons.

The simple fact remains: the fuel we would get from fracking is finite.

Ultimately the gas will run out and we will be in the same situation we’re in now, except we will have lost time we could have used to implement renewable energy systems and we will have various decommissioning / cleanup projects to handle.

So to me, fracking is just a costly distraction.
